The Alpine scenery of the upper Valsesia is still unspoiled. It also has a rich historic and artistic heritage. In the 13th century, the Walser people crossed the Alps into this valley, bringing their culture with them. Because of its lush vegetation, the Valsesia is known as the greenest valley in Italy. Deciduous and coniferous forests, magnificent Alpine pastures and tarns, dominated by the jagged peaks and the glaciers and rock walls of the Monte Rosa massif form the scenery of the upper Valsesia, which has been designated a Parco Naturale, offering plenty of scope to hikers, climbers and naturalists alike. The Sacro Monte, perched on its hill high above Varallo, contains 45 chapels frescoed in the 16th century by the famous local painters Gaudenzio Ferrari and Tanzio da Varallo. This unique architectural jewel is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The chapels also contain 800 life-size, full-relief, painted wood and terracotta statues depicting scenes in the life of Jesus. The valley itself is a vast museum which has preserved its quaint, old-fashioned charm over the centuries. The Stadel (typical wooden farmhouses on a stone base) built by the Walser, its votive wayside chapels, and the frescoed facades of its churches are the outward manifestations of a people which produced many skilful craftsmen and artists, many of whom were summoned to work in courts all over Europe. The village of Campertogno dates back many centuries, probably to the Celtic period. Local people followed the Counts of Biandrate on the First Crusade. At the beginning of the 14th century, a monk called Frà Dolcino, who was accused of being a heretic, hid for a long time on the cliff called the Parete Calva which you can see from the terrace of the Relais San Rocco. The construction of the imposing, 18th-century Parish church of San Giacomo Maggiore (dedicated to St James the Greater) was entrusted to the Filippo Juvarra, based on a design by Guarini. There are many buildings of historical and artistic interest in the Parish. 76 churches, 19 oratories, and the 16th-century houses and fountains, mainly built of stone with their characteristic sloping roofs of slabs of local stone, are all delightful facets of the local architectural and cultural heritage which you will encounter on walks along the footpaths and mule-paths of this beautiful area. The River Sesia, the throbbing heart of the valley, and its tributaries are particularly suited to water sports. The new ski facilities connecting Alagna (at the top of the Valsesia) to Gressoney and Champoluc (in the Aosta Valley) have opened up the Valsesia to the ski domain of Monterosa Ski: 180 km of pistes and endless scope for off-piste enthusiasts, below the majestic slopes of Monte Rosa. , Gressoney e Champoluc. The Relais San Rocco, on request, will organise transport to the ski-slopes of Alpe di Mera and Monterosa Ski, an enchanting ski domain which few in Europe can rival, with facilities linking the ski resorts of the Valsesia and Val d’Aosta. In winter, you can choose from the following sports: skiing, ski-mountaineering, free-riding, heli-skiing, cross-country skiing, ice-climbing and ice-skating. In the other seasons, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, canyoning, hydro-speed, fishing, rock-climbing, free climbing, hiking and trekking, mountain biking, horse-riding and tennis.
