In the background lie the cliff of the ravine and the rugged landscape of the Murgia park of Matera. A small, comfortable gallery furnished with divans and sofas and a small library with various texts of the city's history will welcome you for moments of relaxation and reflection.

The city of Matera
Matera is an ancient cave city and the second province in the Basilicata region of Italy. Almost entirely dug into the rock, Matera is one of the few towns in the world to enchant tourists with its rare and astonishing heritage of dwellings. Located in an area which was formerly defined Lucania, this marvellous place will make you discover a past that is still alive today. The historic area known as the "Sassi" (the stones) clings to the side of La Gravina” ravine. The Sassi are called Barisano and Caveoso and they correspond to the ancient urban quarters of the town. Since 1993, the Sassi of Matera have been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. This amazingly beautiful town is also an incredible example of prehistoric bio-engineering, featuring a complex rain water harvesting system. Matera is such a fascinating place that it caught the eye of many 20th century directors. Among those who chose the town as a set for their movies there are Mel Gibson with The Passion of the Christ”, Pierpaolo Pasolini with Christ stopped at Eboli” and Catherine Hardwick with The nativity story”. Not only does Matera boast the Sassi, but it also features other tourist attractions such as churches in the old town centre and a number of thematic museums.
